CRITICAL READING #3: Research Methodologies

CRITICAL READING #3: Research Methodologies The research methodologies I've read are all familiar to me based on my previous educational and professional backgrounds when I was back in the Philippines. I took up Marketing Management back in college and we had a course about market research and that's the first time I've encountered these methodologies. After getting my bachelor's degree, I worked as a Brand Manager for 4 years at one of the leading food and beverage manufacturing companies in the country. Being in that field, I've conducted and been a part of a lot of research studies for various products -- new and existing products. Looking back, what I remember was that the hardest part of conducting a research study was formulating your research question. That was the part of the project that took a lot of time; a lot of back and forth as having the right research question will more or less dictate the outcome of your project. Once you're confident th...

FIELD POST #2: Virtual Meeting with the Mentees

FIELD POST #2: Virtual Meeting with the Mentees   Last Friday, 03/13, I had a facetime meeting with Adi and Deborah. This was the first time I had spoken with Adi after meeting him at the YARI convening meeting. Prior to this, we've been exchanging emails back and forth discussing about updates regarding their research question as well as deliverables. They're very quick to respond to emails which is good. Adi and Deborah seem to have a good working relationship which makes communication easier. In some way, they also know what they want for their project and it's very refreshing just getting to know them as they talk about their past experiences and why they want to do their chosen topic. We spent some time discussing about how to refine their research question. But I think bulk of the time was spent about us exchanging ideas (or me listening to them) on what research methodologies they want to use for their research. They talked ...

CRITICAL READING #2: Disability Critical Race Theory

CRITICAL READING #2: Disability Critical Race Theory   Dis/ability critical race studies: What resonated with me from this reading was how prominent the relationship and intersectionality between race and dis/ability is in society. I am well aware of how racism is (sad to say) an integral part of this country. Given this knowledge, I must admit that I was still shocked and initially baffled on how being a person of color is equated to someone who has a dis/ability. How being non-dominant racial, ethnic, and linguistic continue to be referred, labeled and placed in special education, particularly in the categories of LD, Intellectual Disability, and Emotional Disturbance or Behavior Disorders.   In the introduction, it was discussed how throughout history, some people were trying to prove individuals of African descent possessed limited intelligence and were therefor not quite fully human. Just writing this down mak...

FIELD POST #1: YARI Project Partners Convening

FIELD POST #1: YARI Project Partners Convening   Meeting the people behind the YARI project and getting to know all the kids who are part of this endeavor for the very first time has been one of the highlights of my YDEV MA program experience (by far). Everything that I've felt, learned and experienced from this meeting can be summed up into 3 stages.   Stage 1: Nervous and Uncertain From the day I agreed to be a part of this project, I had the general understanding of what it is all about and in a way, what was required of me. However, I never really knew the specific details on how it is going to go about -- none of us did (I think). Days leading up to this meeting, all I remember was having that feeling of uncertainty in terms of what is going to happen. Nervousness hit me when I remembered/ realized that this is a year-long endeavor and its not like a regular course wherein I get a grade and...
